Terms of use

Last updated: October 2026

By using ChessPortrait.com, you accept the terms below.

The service

ChessPortrait.com is a chess game analysis tool, provided as is, without warranty of any kind. Evaluations are computed automatically and may contain errors; they are a study aid, not a final verdict. The service may change, be interrupted or discontinued at any time.

Independence

ChessPortrait.com is an independent project. It is not affiliated with Chess.com or Lichess, nor endorsed or sponsored by them. The names Chess.com, Lichess and Stockfish belong to their respective owners and are used only to refer to the services and software involved.

Publisher and legal notice

This site is published and developed by Maxime Sednaoui, in a personal and non-professional capacity. Director of publication: Maxime Sednaoui. Contact: contact@chessportrait.com.

As French law (LCEN) allows for a non-professional publisher, the publisher's personal address is not published; it has been provided to the host.

Host: Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, United States, +1 650 319 8930, cloudflare.com.

Ownership of the site

The ChessPortrait.com site, its code, its texts, its name, its design and the way it presents its analyses are protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

You may use the site for your own personal use. Without prior written permission, you may not copy, reproduce, republish or host it in whole or in part, create a derivative work from it, exploit it commercially, extract its code or its data by automated means, or reverse-engineer it beyond what the law makes mandatory.

These restrictions do not apply to the open-source components the site uses, which remain governed by their own licences (see « Open-source software » below), nor to your games and analyses, which are yours and never leave your device.

The portrait card

The portrait card is part of the site and is protected in the same way: its template and layout, its illustrations, its backdrops and frames, the vocabulary of classes, titles, traits and flaws, and the way the measurements of a game are turned into a portrait. All rights reserved.

The card you generate is about your own games: you may save, publish and share it freely, including on social networks, as it is produced and keeping the mention of the site on it.

Without prior written permission, you may not alter its content to make it say something else, remove or hide the site's name or logo, produce cards in bulk or by automated means, reuse its template, its illustrations, its classes or its titles in another service, or build an equivalent service from it.

Publishing a card

You may only publish the card of a Chess.com or Lichess account that is yours, as ChessPortrait.com produced it. A published card is public. A temporary card stays online for 7 days; a permanent card, published from an account, stays online at your username's address as long as the site exists, unless it is taken down.

Anyone can report a card. The publisher may remove at any time, without notice, a card that impersonates a player, looks tampered with or shows offensive content; a card reported as offensive by several people is hidden automatically until it is reviewed. The player concerned can ask for a card in their name to be removed by writing to contact@chessportrait.com.

Account

During the beta, accounts open by invitation and are free. An account matches a single Chess.com or Lichess profile, which you prove is yours. You are responsible for access to your email address, which is used to sign in. The publisher may close an account that breaks these terms.

Access to the service

Access to ChessPortrait.com may be limited, suspended or refused in case of automated use, abnormal load, attempts to circumvent these terms, or interference with the running of the site.

Third-party data

Games are obtained through the public interfaces of Chess.com and Lichess, within their rate limits. You remain bound by the terms of use of those services.

The site only uses public data from Chess.com and Lichess, and never acts on your behalf on those services: it does not play, post anything or change your account. To check that a profile is yours, it only reads your identity.

Liability

To the extent permitted by law, the publisher cannot be held liable for any damage resulting from the use of the site or the inability to use it, including the loss of data stored in your browser.

Open-source software

Analyses are computed by Stockfish, free software under the GNU GPLv3 licence, distributed unmodified; its source code is available on GitHub.

The site also uses chess.js (BSD 2-clause licence), Chart.js (MIT), Colin M.L. Burnett's Cburnett pieces (BSD 3-clause), and the Lichess openings database (CC0).
